(tress association.] DUNEDIN, 25th October. Ah Wah was fined £10 at the Police Court to-day on a charge of having opium in his possession. John Haynes, charged with laying totalisator odds at Wingatui <>n 12th October, was fined £3 and costs. NAPIER, 25th October. A poll of ratepayers was taken to-day on a proposal to borrow £2000 for the purchase of the Athenaeum and the establishment of ' a Public Library and Reading Room and Technical School. Little interest was taken in the poll, and the proposal was lost by 68 votes, 355 Totes being recorded against it and 287 for it.

' Messrs. Sidey, Meech and Co. will sell to-morrow, in" their rooms, at 2 p.m. sharp, the whole of a caterer's stook-in-trade, also furniture and effects. Mr. W. F. Shortt will hold an unreserved salo of drapery, etc., at his mart, Willis-street, to-morrow (Thursday), at I o'clock. Tho latest novelty in motor cars is a miniature car for children which Messrs. Jenkinson and Co. (Limited) have just imported and arc now exhibiting at their works, 48, Victoria-street. The car is propelled by pedak, and is equipped with flleering-wheel and horn.
