ENTERTAINMENTS, ETC.

STEPHENSON'S MUSICAL COMEDY COMPANY. "The Rose of the Riviera" continues to win favour at the Opera House, but must be withdrawn after to-morrow nrght, and will bo replaced on Friday by another novelty in the two-act musical comedy entitled " The Skirt Dancer." The music of this work is by Trotere, the composer of "In Old Madrid," " Asthore," and numerous other charming ballads. Both music and piece are said to be distinctly better than the usual run of light musical comedy. Several of the numbers are recognised musical gems, while the plot is clever and coherent. On Saturday afternoon, there will be a matinee of " The Rose of the Riviera," when children will be admitted to all parts at half-price. THE DIX COMPANY. Weather notwithstanding, the Dix Company drew a fair audience to the Theatre Royal last night, where the Gotham Quartet, and other contributors, made merry and 'gave pleasure to watchers and listeners. Mr. Fred. Graham and Miss Nellie Dent take their farewell this evening 1 , and to-morrow there will be a revival of tho Christy minstrel entertainments. THE FULLER ENTERTAINERS. The Fuller programme is good enough just no^ to amuse and entertain the most jaded appetites for variety. The Japanese wirewalker, Messrs. Scott and Wallace, Mr. Fred, Rivenhall, and the Trevena Sisters give "star" turns, but there are many other clever people in the company. FITZGERALDS' CIRCUS. By the Victoria to-day tnis popular combination arrived from Australia, and .will open its season here to-morrow evening at the back of the Opera House. One of the chief attractions will be the team of Japanese wrestlers, Arumayama Matzutaro, Otokojima Kokitchi, Maruyama Manjelo, Takanoya Shigajelo, Makadi Fukumatzu, Onimoko Nawakitchi, Kimula Jorakitchi (umpire), and Hiramatzu (interpreter). The style of .wrestling is particularly vigorous, and the wrestlers are said to go about their business with an earnestness and energy that arouses much excitement. The Ashton Family of acrobats, riders, and wirewalkers are another feature of the bill; Dr. Gordon, "the strong man, 1 ' will appear, and there are a menagerie and other attractions. The attendance at Mr. Maughan Bar--nett's organ recital in St. John's Church last night was interfered with by the weather. The programme, which was as usual artistically interpreted, was interrupted by a mishap to the organ. Mr. Barnett was testing the full power of the instrument, when the hydraulic engine at- j tached to the organ for blowing pur- I poses collapsed, and the recital came to an abrupt conclusion. A social gathering in aid of the Newtown Roman Catholic Schools will be held in Victoria Hall this evening. The full programme for the entertainment to be given by St. Peter's Club, assisted by leading musicians and vocalists, in St.' Peter's Hall to-morrow night is advertised. There is every prospect of a. very enjoyable evening being ! spent by those who lend their patronage. The annual Bazaar in connection with St. Augustine's Church, Petone, was opened by Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.H.R., this afternoon, and will be continued this evening and to-morrow afternoon and evening. Several novelties have been introduced. Amongst the many attractions will be a tug-of-war competition, arranged by Mr. Beckett between teams from the Petone Football Club, Petone Navals, Gear Company, Junior Club, and Workingmen's Club. A shooting gallery, submarine mining exhibition, gymnastic display, and other features will be. in evidence.
