ARBITRATION COURT AWARDS.
TO THB EDITOR. Sir, — I notice in last evening's Post that Mr. Hannan, of Auckland, has denied paying wages lower than those allowed in the various awards of the Court. I should like to point out that our complaint is not against Mr. Hannan at all, even if he did pay low wages — unfortunately many Wellington employers do that, as witness the number of enforcement cases recently before the Court — but against the Arbitration Act, which the Court in its growing wisdom now declares does not apply to Mr. Hannan, or any one else not engaged in the industry under which the enforcement was sought to be made. We also protest against the unsatisfactory position the Court has placed employers in, for on the one hand we have employers fined for underpaying drivers employed for theii own purposes and not engaged in the carrying industry, and on the other hand drapers and private persons let off who have employed tradesmen and labourers for a similar purpose. Where is the difference ?— I am, etc , W. H. BENNETT. Wellington, 18th October. '
