HARBOUR BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs. Wm. Cable (Chairman), H. Beaachamp, C. E. Daniel], D. Nathan, F. Townsend J. Ml^ellaai, and the Hon. T. K. Macdonald, M.L.C. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. W. T. Wood.M.H.R., and F. H. Fraser, M.L.C. The Treasurer's report showed the following balances : — Bank books : Current account credit balance, £9444 4s 7d; imprest -account, credit balance, £1000 ; on fixed deposit, £14,000. Payments : For interest, accounts and wages. £11,184 17s lid ; for progress on contracts, £4038 17s 9d; for salaries for October, £693 9a Id.; total payments, £15,917 4s 9d. The following recommendations of the Wharves and Aocounts Committee were adopted : — To call for tenders, closing in January next, for 165 tons cut and punched steel ' hoopp and two tons of etuds for wool-pressing purposes, for delivery in September and November, 1905. To obtain one of "Pearn's" steam force pumps for installation on board the Whakarire for sluicing down the material in the hoppers. To approve of the plans forwarded by the Railway Department for the construction of a- wharf on the eastern side of the harbour for the removal of stone for use in .the protection of the Hutt Railway, to decline to give permission for the removal of stone from the foreshore, and to defer the consideration of the question as to whether the Board would take over the wharf when the Railway Department has finished with it until that time. (The site of the proposed wharf is opposite Ward Island, near Higg's Point.) It was also resolved on the Committee's recommendation : — That the Chairman should write to the Minister in charge of the State Coal Mine Department seeking the information which the Secretary had been unable to obtain as to who was responsible for the deposit of debris- from the Government hulk into the harbour. On the Wharves and Accounts Committee's recommendation, the Board decided to call for tenders for a brick building on the reclaimed land at the junction of Customhouse-quay and Waterloo-quay. In this building, men waiting for labour will be accommodated on the upper floor, and on the lower floor there will be waiting rooms for ferry passengers, stevedores, and others. 'lhe Chairman reported that the receipt of a copy un4er seal of the bylaws adopted by the Board at its last meeting was duly acknowledged by the Hon. the Minister having charge of the Marine Department, and that they, therefore, game into force on Ist October. The Chairman reported that tne seal of the Board been affixed to a petition to the House of Representatives against the Petone Foreshore Vesting Bill, No. 2, and that the solioitor and secretary appeared before the Local Bills Committee in support of the petition. Eight tenders were received for the contract for supply of ten hydraulic jiggers. The lowest, if found to be in order, will be accepted. The selection of a probationer pilot, by the Committee to which this work was remitted, was approved, and the Board will take the necessary eteps to engage the successful candidate. The question of proposed ferry jetty at Rona Bay came up in committee. The Engineer was instructed to proceed with the plans, and the correspondence was placed in the hands of the Board's solicitor to see to the dedication of the necessary land on the foreshore. Payments as per schedule, £15,917 4s 9d, were approved.
