PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

* . THE PAST YEAR'S WORK. The Society for the Protection, of Women and Children (Wellington branch) will hold its seventh annual meeting on Tuesday next. The annual report states that the total number of cases dealt with, by the Society now amounts to 448; during the last year 71 were dealt with, of which 54 were new cases arising during the year. These included 7 cases of wife maintenance, 6 cases of maintenance of illegitimate children, 5 cases of alleged cruelty and neglect of children. The Society has secured mree satisfactory adoptions, and won. all its five Court cases. The report refers to the good work done by the lady member of the Benevolent Trustees, Mrs. Darvall, who was nominated by the Society and other similar bodies (Committees of the Levm Home, Alevandra. Home, and Ladies' Christian Association). The success of the experiment of having a woman Trustee leads me Society to hope that, when the next vacancy occurs, another woman will be elected to the Trustees. The Society also hopes to nominate a candidate for election to the Hospital Board. Regret is expressed that nothing has yet been done for the establishment of homes for imbecile children, and that another of the Society suggestions — women doctors for female wards in Asylums— has not yet been given effect to. The receipts for the year from subscriptions and donations amount to £74 6s 6d, the expenditure to £98 2s sd. "A slight falling off will be noticed in the subscriptions for this year, which is due to the illness and absence of the Secretary, who has been unable to carry o\xi/ her regular canvass. The committee would like to suereest to the Subscribers that much time would be saved for more useful work if they could forward their subscriptions to the office. The committee feels 'sure that the generous support accorded to their work in the past by tfce public will be continued." The Society expresses its thanks to the Secretary (Mrs. Waters), other officers, other organisations, the press, the pubrlic, etc^ v
