THE MONMOUTH BY-ELECTION. SIR JOHN COCKBURN'S CANDIDATURE. [press association.] LONDON, 22nd October. The Conservative Association at West Monmouth declines to withdraw Sir John Cockburn's candidature. The central office of the association in London will not recognise him as the party's official candidate, owing to his advanced views on education, disestablishment in Wales, and the Taff Vale decision. THE FISCAL PROBLEM. "A MISCHIEVOUS CRUSADE." (Received October 24, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, 23rd October. ! The Right Hon. H. H. Asquith, Liberal member for East Fife, speaking at Inverness, declared that the fiscal campaign was a mischievous crusade, and was carried on with the Government's connivance. He urged the electors to end it. He added that he was confident the colonial democrat would not purchase preferential treatment in the markets of the Motherland at the cost of lowering the standard of life of the British democracy.
