THE NAVY LEAGUE.
BANQUET TO MR. WYATT. [press association.] LONDON, 23rd October. The Navy League banqueted Mr. H. P. Wyatt, its envoy to the colonies, on his return from Australasia. The Hon. W. P. Reeves, Agent-Gen-eral for New Zealand, who proposed "The United Empire," coupled with the names of Mr. Wyatt and Professor Parkin, declared the idea that the colonies could ignore the Imperial navy and create meir own mimic fleets was preposterous. The demand that the colonies -should contribute to the Empire defences as if they were inhabitants of the United Kingdom was equally preposterous. Mr. Wyatt expressed gratitude to Lord Ranfurly and Sir Arthur Havelock, who were the Governors of New Zealand and Tasmania respectively during his visit, for presiding at meetings, and to Sir Edmund Barton, Sir John Forrest, Mr. Seddon, and Sir J. G. Ward; for their support.
