SPORTING. THE WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. FIRST DAY'S RACES.

In five out of the eight races decided at the Hutt yesterday the favourites won. The inevitable surprise happened in the Wellington Handicap, in which event a complete outsider secured the prize, and paid a dividend of £19 12s. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Mahutonga, who has been performing so consistently of late, was made a strong favourite, 334 out of 1367 tickets being in his favour. But .the. Quilt gelding, after a game struggle, bad to yield to Tercelet, who left the barrier in a hurry, and made the running from start to finish. Perhaps the course, which was inclined to be soft in places, had something to do with Mahutonga's display, for he appeared to be in splendid fettle, and he ran a plucky race. The winner has not been seen out since he ran at Mariborough, when he . won, tbe Blenheim Handicap (one and a quarter miles) under Bst 31b, and on the following day he was defeated by Cyrus, who was in the ruck _at the finish of yesterday's race. Convoy, another aspirant for Cap honours, ran well in the Wellington Handicap, but Gboorka, Madrigal, and Full Cry put up a rather disappointing peih formance towards the end of the journey. In the Wainui Handicap Kabaroa commanded the largest support, but the aged Blazer upset calculations, winning a nicely-finished race with a little to spar£. Kaharoa's rider seemed, to be rather bustled towards the finish, and the gelding appeared to lose ground at a critical juncture. Only three horses sported silk in the Hurdle Handicap, in which, race the favourite, Killarne}', had little difficulty in disposing of Opposition. Boomerang easily accounted for the Nursery Handicap, and Lass-o'-Gowrie kept her heels flashing in the face of the field in the Flying Handicap from end to end. The Hack events attracted good fields, and Mr. Chadwick (the handicapper) had the satisfaction of seeing some good racing. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £8578, as compared with £10,029 on the corresponding day last year. A double totalisator was opened on the Wellington and Flying Handicaps, and attracted 736 investments. The winners, however^ were not selected, and the money was returned less 10 per cent. ' The arrangements were well carried out, and the gloriously fine day made the outing thoroughly enjoyable for the large number of people present. Mr. A. E. White is to be complimented on the smoothness with which Iho duties at- , tached to the secretarial office were performed. The catering, which was in the hands of Mr. King, of Auckland, was also satisfactory. Mr. Piper controlled the starting, and Mr. W. H. Hartgill acted as Judge.
