LATEST REPORTS. THE GAPS ON THE GOVERNMENT LINE.

TRAFFIC TEMPORARILY RESTORED It appears that there are altogether six breaches in the line between Wellington and. Petone, the worst between Ngahauranga and Petone. Three of them are bad ones, and will take some time to repair Eroperly. The wrecked area on tho Nga-auranga-Petone section is between the semaphore jusfc beyond Ngahauranga, and the- biz bend a mile or two this side of

Petono. The breaches are all caused by the wash of the heavy seas, and at the bend a part of the concrete wall has been broken dovrn, while in mother place, about a mile and a half from Ngahatiranga, the rails were left hanging over a gap. A gang of men started work on repairs at daybreak this morning, and by 2 o'clock the line had been temporarily restored, a train which left Ngahfiuranga- a*> 2.15 get ting through to Petone without rniahap. The servic'o will, however, bo disorganised until the weather clears. The Depal tment hoped to send away the Wairarapa train at 4.7, and also the 5.20 and 6.5 trains, and to have all clear for the passing of tho down express from the Wairarapa. After that the service will probably close down for the night, 'ihe danger lies in the effect of the eea at high tide, somewhere about 7 o'clock* which may cause a, further wash-out unless the weather moderates in the meantime.
