CONSTRUCTION OF WARSHIPS.
YARROW AND CO.'S CONTRACT. ! COMPARATIVE COST OF SHIPBUILDING. I [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] LONDON, 3rd October. It i& now stated that the contract which Yarrow and Co., of Poplar (London), obtained from the Austrian Government to build torpedo-boats has not been sublet in Trieste, as was formerly reported. The firm declares, however, that owing to the loss of £2500 involved in paying time and a-half rates tor nightwork, fewer will be employed during the coming winter than otherwise. The loss in wages is estimateid at £200,000. ' Many unemployed in the East End have held meetings lately, and petitioned the County Council to have new Thames steamers built in London, in order to mitigate the distress. I Yarrow and Co.'s manager stated in an j interview : "We could have obtained as much of the Austrian contract as we wanted, but we consulted a few of our ! leading men, and they refused to accept j less thin time and a-half." The Vienna correspondent of the Daily Mail states that Austria denies intending to place such an extensive order abroad, and states that models alore were ordered in England. The correspondent alleges that Austria is treating 1 independently with the Stabilmento Technico at Trieste and the Yarrows, and that iio order has yet been placed at Trieste. Shipbuilding there, he adds, is 30 per cent, dearer than in England, but at present Trieste ii favoured o^ing to depression.
