The new iteamer Putikl, built by Messrs. Seagar Bros., of Auckland, for the Wellington and Wanganui Steam Packet Company, arrived from Auckland at noon yesterday. The vessel left the northern port at 10.45 p.m. on Wednesday, and steamed against, heavy, north.* <
erly winds until she had crossed the Bay of Plenty. Rough weather oontinued all the way down the coast, and garc the ateamer a satisfactory trial as far as sea-going qualities are concerned. The Putiki, which is the. largest steel steamer built in New Zealand, has a flush deck aft and a well deck forward. She has two holds, one 60ft, and the other 18ft, and her principal dimensions are: — Length, 155 ft overall; 25ft beam, and carrying capacity about 400 tons. The engines are situated just abaft amidships. They are compound sin face-condensing, and were constructed in Wellington by Messri. D. Robertson and Co. Tho high piessure cylinder is 19in in diameter, and the low pressure 38in, .with' a stroko of 24 inches, and the engines work at 705 revolutions per minute. The boiler is of the marine type, with two furnaces, and is lift long by lift 6in diameter. Ballast tanks are fitted fore and aft, and there are four watertight bulkheads. The vessel is well equipped with appliances for working cargo, and is fitted with electrio light throughout. ' She has passenger accommodation for eight persons. Altogether, the new steamer is a strong serviceable looking craft, built essentially for cargo carrying without pretention to graceful lines, and she will probably be fd&nd well suited for the trade. Captain M'lntyre, formerly of the Stormbird, brought the vessel down, Mr. Challo accompanying him as first mate, and Mr. Wahlstrom as second mate. Mr. W. C. The Union Company has been advised that the Wainui, from Wellington via Pieton and Nelson, arrived at Westpoit at 5 o'clock this morning, and sailed again for Greymouth at 7 o'olock. The Tarawera, due from Auckland, Gisborne, and Napier to-morrow morning, is to land 450 tons of cargo at Wellington. The Penguin, from Nelson and Picton, is to sail from 'Picton for Wellington at about 8 o'clock to-nigbt. The Rotomahana will take 14 bullocks to Lyttelton to-night; -consigned to Mr. Ferguson. Mr. Ball ia at present acting mate of the steamer Kapiti in place of Mr. M'Nab, who has come ashore to go up for an examination. Two new furnaces will be pnt -into the Union Company's steamer Warrimoo during her overhaul at Dunedin. • The local office of the Shaw-Savill Company has been advised that the Corinthie left Plymouth on the 24th September for Wellington via Capetown and Hobart. The vessel is due at Capetown on the 15th October, at Hobart about 3rd November, and she should reach Wellington about the Bth November. The Marina Department has been informed that on the night of the 28th September the master of the s.s. Ngunguru passed an upturned boat painted black, about thirty feet keel, nine nnles west by south of Sinclair Head. The Otago Daily Times dates that tho new steamer Storm, belonging to the Canterbury Steamship Company, Ltd., is expected at Dunedin in about two weeks time. The vessel is bringing a cargo of salt.
