DIRECT SHIPMENT OF FROZEN MEAT TO CARDIFF.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir — I lead with interest your extract from; the report of the Acting Produce Commissioner (London) on the meat sent direct to Cardiff. He writes: — "Although a charge of -^d over London rates was imposed to cover extra freight, the saving in milage from London and the better condition of the meat counterbalances this charge." The information I have received does not bear out the Acting Produce Commissioner's report. The Trade reports as follows : — "Mutton — The Eangatira, after discharging cargo in London, took to Cardiff 4096 carcases, the bulk of which was sold to a River Plate company, and despatched to vari*ous depots in the North and Midlands, wheie they have since been selling at prices which give about jd profit per lb, but are about per lb less than London rates, and where they have competed with sheep belonging to branch houses of London consignees. The first direct shipment of Canterbury mutton to a port other than London can hardly have lealised exporters' cx])L>i:latioiis, or in any way been of red bunc-fit to New Zealand trade." — I am. etc., THOMAS MACKENZIE. Pailiamentary Buildings.
