FOOTBALL. TARANAKI v. AUCKLAND.
fBY TELEGHAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Ist September. The football match Auckland v Taranaki was played on the Recreation Grounds to-day. The fact that Taranaki had been unbeaten this year gave an additional interest to the game. The Taranaki forwards played a dashing game throughout, and play was chiefly in Auckland's territory. The visitors' defence was very strong, despite the determined rushes of their opponents. Taranaki kicked off and worked up to the northerners' ground, getting dangerously near the line, but the pressure was relieved. A free-kick was then awarded Taranaki, but Allen failed in the attempt to register a goal. Some hot play ensued in Taranaki's quarters. A good piece of play by Mynott brought the play upheld. Several free-kicks for both (sides followed, the play going «up and down. Hunter eventually, by a fine kick, sent the ball towards Auckland's goal, and a chance for Taranaki scoring was mulled. At this stage play was stopped a while owing to Phillips being injured. Soon afterwards, from a throw-in, Auckland worked the ball down the field, and receiving a fise-kick in a dangerous position, Eaton scored a penalty goal, making the points even. Thus matters stood at half time. Taranaki soon made the game lively, and after a series of scrums and free-kicks, a splendid passing run by Glasgow, Hunter, and Humphries resulted in the latter securing a try, which Glasgow failed to improve. No further score resulted. The Taranaki forwards proved too good for their opponents. At times some of the visitors' play was rough. For Auckland, Long and M'Duff were the pick of the forwards, while Asher, M'Gregor, and Sutherland gave excellent help to the backs. For Taranaki the forwards all played well. Humphries at half never played a better game. Allen was also in grand form. CHRISTCHURCH HIGH SCHOOL v. NELSON COLLEGE. CHRISTCHURCH, Ist September. The match Boys' High School v. Nelson College, played here this afternoon, produced a poor display of football. The visitors held up well in the forward work, but were inferior in the back department.
