HOOKEY. THE LADIES' TOURNAMENT. KIWI BEATS HAWERA.
Another stage of the tournament was reached yesterday afternoon, when the Kiwi (Wellington) team met and defeated the Hawera ham by 3 goals to nil. The following were the names of the players :— Hawera -. Goal, Evelyn Caplain; full-backe, Florence Greaves and Nellie Douglas (Captain) ; halves, Bessie M'Lean, Millie Hunter, and Lily Swan ; forwards, Queenic Glen, Eva Baird, Elsie Caplain, Nancie Coutts, and Phoebe Baird. Kiwi : Goal, E. Chalmers ; fullbacks, T. Shapter and G. Harcourt; halves, Bessie Fitzgerald, K. Fitzgerald, and A. Rawson . (Captain) ; forwards, E* Bulkley, M. Bulkley, A. Edwin, E. Rawson, and G. Runcio. Mr. W. Organ was the referee. There wers some three or four hundred spectators. The game was thoroughly enjoyable, exciting at times, and provided a fair exposition of hockey. The Kiwis got to work very quickly, Elsie Rawson leading the attack on the Hawera territory. The country players repelled with much vigour, and then Queenie Glen, a vary speedy forward and expert dribbler, led the way back to Wellington's ground. Again tho local players made- an onslaught upon the visitors' circle, and within five minutes of the opening of the match Elsie Rawson shot a goal at an awkward angle — Kiwi 1, Hawera 0. In the next move in the game Bessie Fitzgerald was a conspicuous player, and there was some good dribbling and centreing by E. Rawson, and tho same player was a tower of strength when Hawera returned the attack. Glen was prominent in attack and defence for Hawera, and Runcie and Chalmers offered stubborn defence when the Kiwis were attacked. Harcourt also saved the position on one occasion. E. Rawson caused her side to be penalised for "sticks" several times during the first spell. After a period in which the ball travelled over all parts of the ground, the Kiwis made a determined attack upon Hawera, and within two minutes of half-time Avis Edwin shot a goal for the home team — Kiwi 2, Hawera 0. Kiwis risked a great deal occasionally by a tendency to drive the ball across the front of their goal,' but Hawera failed to take advantage of the opportunities thus offered. In the final efforts before the call of "spell-o" petite Bulkley was very much in evidence in wing play, and put in some good dribbling. Shortly after the starting of the second portion of the game the Hawera goalkeeper saved a goal, but in the saving used the back of her stick, and as a result the referee gave a penalty "bully" in front of the goal, from which Edwin easily put the ball through. — Kiwi 3, Hawera 0. This spurred the visitors into a most energetic effort, and an exciting rush took them into the Kiwi circle. Chalmers was too sure a keeper of the goal, and on the line being cleared a nice bit of passing play sent the ball across to Bulkley, who got into the circle and made a good but ineffectual shot. Yet another effort, and the petite Bulkley won home, but the score was disallowed, the player being off-side. Again the ball did a great deal of travelling between tbe two lines, but Flo. Grcaves's mightly hits, and Captain Douglas's coolness, for Hawera, and the effectiveness of Chalmers on the last line of defence for Wellington, prevented further addition to the score. Bessie Fitzgerald worked even harder than during the first spell, and Glen was an everpresent member for Hawera. The Rawson sisters did good work, the Captain especially setting her team an "excellent example, in the use of the feet in defence work. Harcourt, Runcie, and Shapter flashed across the arena of play jccasioxially with good effect. One of the last scenes of all was a fine dribble by Glen right down the field, and into the mouth of the Kiwi goal. The final shot was saved by a mere inch by Chalmers, though some onlookers thought the ball had crossed the line. The game ended — Kiwi 3, Hairera 0. The tournament is to be resumed tomorrow, when the Raukuras (Hutt) meet the Cravens (Palmerston North). The final is to.be played on Monday next between the Kiwis (Wellington) and the winners of to-morrow's semi-final. A "rep." match is to be played on Saturday, the Wellington-Hutt clubs meeting thoss of the rest of the colony. The Craven (Palmerston North) and Nelson teams had a friendly game at Day's Bay yesterday morning, the match resulting in a win for the Cravens by 7 goals to nil. The scoring was done by A. Dalrymple (3), J. Fitzberbert (2), Daisy Bagnall, and C. Wheeler (one each).
