■ c- _ [mess association.! * J AUCKLAND, 18th D~ecember. Lord Kanfurly was engaged to-day inspecting sites for the proposed Veterans' Home. In the evening his Excellency presented the prizes at the Grammar School. Speaking of the English Education Bill, his Lordship said it was no : doubt of a Highly controversial character but it would be admitted that,- the present system was not what it should be. The. object of the Bill was to put the country in a much better posrtion in relation to education, and the {Government had resolved to stand or fall by it. His personal opinion Mas that a change in the educational system was absolutely necessary. On Saturday the Governor will attend the cricket match between Lord Hawke's team and the Aucklaud representatives. William Richardson, the well-known temperance lecturer, who served two weeks' imprisonment for non-payment of a fine in connection with the trouble at Sir Joseph Ward's meeting, was released from gaol to-day. He was demonstratively welcomed this evening, a procession of several thousand persons pnssing through' the city. ' Mr. Richardson was continually cheered, and delivered an address. This Day. The Arbitration Court to-day heard legal argument in 'the clothing trade dispute in reference to the power of the Court to adopt the Southern award, which is opposed by Auckland firms, chiefly on the ground that an industrial agreement already existed here binding certain firms. The Court reserved its decision on this point till Monday. THAMES, 18th December. A memorial to troopers who fell in South Africa was unveiled this afternoon by the Hon J. M'Gowan, who eulogised the efforts of the New Zealand contingents and sympathised with the, relatives of those who had fallen. NELSON, 18th December. The Rev. H. Hewilson, of Knox Church, Dunedin, presented the awards and prizes to the pupils of the two Nelson Colleges to-night, making an effective speech. / The , Nelson College Governors to-day resolved to accept the proposals of the Government to provide education at the Colleges of boys and girls having passed the sixth standard under fourteen years of age. It is expected that sixty-five pupils will at once have to be provided for. HOKITIKA, 18th December. The Crown Lands Ranger, acting under instructions from the Lands Department, has issued a batch of summonses against a number of sawmillers for polluting certuin streams with sawdust. Great interest is being taken in the matter, as an adverse decision would practically mean the shutting down of several mills. The cases will be called on at the Magistrate's Court to-morrow, but owing to the absence of the Magistrate, will be adjourned till after the holidays. INVERCARGILL, 18th December. , The Borough Council has decided that the sum to be borrowed for the proposed Town Hall will be £12,000, making a total of £i 5,000 available for the building ,The isbue will be put to the ratepayers at an early date. HAWERA, 17th Dec. The opening of the new class-rooms at the District High School is being celebrated by an industrial exhibition. The cost of the rooms was £2400, and the school is now one of the largest and most complete in the Wanganui district. DUNEDIN,' 17th Dec. Mr. W. Earnshaw, the defeated candidate for Caversham, wait presented by his supporters last night with a purse containing 85 sovereigns, and an enlarged photo of her husband was presented to Mrs. Earnshaw (FEOM OUR OWN CORKESFONDENT.)
