CRICKET.
I Saturday's cricket at the Basin Reserve ,was a day full of good business for bowlers, and some fine averages were obtained. There was a fairly good attendance of the public, and both matches cotnmencon the previous Saturday were concluded. Below are details of the play. WELLINGTON v. PHOENIX. On the previous Saturday Wellington had 8 wickets down and 343 runs up. Latham and Taylor, the not out inch, took' strike again, but the former was bowled by Brice after adding six to his score, . and the innings closed for 349. Hales did not bat. With, a heartrending task in front, Phoenix put its pads on 'and took centre, but Hales gave little opportunity for more than that. He sent down 15 overs, 7 of them were maiden?, 15 runs made off them, and 6 wickets were lost in doing so. The innings closed for 50. Following on, the stricken Phoenicians made 53, Richardson and Hales being * the destroyer*, and Wellington won by an innings and 246 runs. MIDLAND v. OLD BOYS. The position of this game at the conclusion of the day's play on the previous Saturday left a smouldering hope amongst the younger, chib'^s supporters that there was a possibility of victory for their team. Midland's first innings had closed for 131, and Old Boys had 5 wickets down with their score at 105. But the innings concluded disastrously. The board showed 6 for 107, 7 for 107, 8 for 107, 9 for 107, and all out 110. Stephensou bowled cleverly, and ended 6 careers for 26 runs. Midland commenced the second innings and made only 85. Tucker scattered 4 of them for 24. This left the ex-Collegians 107 to make to win, and they made less than half the number, and lost by 55 runs. The Midland fielding was beautiful — four catches (one by Hickson, one by Read, and two by Upham) being worth a pilgrimage to see. Below are details : — MIDLAND.
