LOCAL AND GENERAL.

I The anxiety of the public 'for news in 'connection v/Kh the missing passengers and ci - ew of the wrecked steamer Elingamile -wy.g plainly shown last evening in connection iv-ith tho Special Edition of this paper issued shortly before 6 o'clock. The edition, which contained a full list of lha names of those rescued from the island by the steamer Zealandia, as well

as other news, was eagerly sought after, and the thousands of copies printed were rapidly disposed of over the counter of our front office, and by the runners despatched to the different quarters of the city. In the event of any special news coming to hand, from the search steamers or otherwise, after we go to press this evening, arrangements will*be made to place the information before the public at the earliest possible moment, either by "extra," special edition of the paper, or by posting it on the window of our publishing oilice. Mr. W. L. Rees, counsel for the Gisborne native plaintiffs who won the Waingaromia and Rangitira land cases before the Court of Appeal, intends to leave for England in March next to oppose the defendant Assets Company's appeal to the Privy Council. He expects the" Privy Council's final decision by July. The Public Trustee has arranged to establish a deposit branch in about a fortnight's time. This is to be on similar lines to those in foicfe in all large cities at Home and elsewhere where they are usually run by a private company. The principle is that persons having a nunibev of valuable documents can make arrangements with the Public Trust Office to take charge of them and be responsible for their safe keeping. The office will provide boxes and duplicate keys, one of which will be in the hands of the owner, the other being retained by the Public Trustee. The accommodation in the present office is ample, but when the proposed new premises are erected special provision will be made for this department. Of course, a charge will be made for each box. The Talune brought 250 merino sheep from Sydney this morning. They are consigned to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Ltd.), Napier, and were bred by the Hon. J. H. Henry M'Cormack, a. previous-ly-convicted inebriate, was fined 40s, in default seven days' imprisonment. Thiee urchins were charged with stealing smoking-pipes valued at £4 10s from a tobacconist's storeroom. His Worship ordered one to be sent to an industrial school, and after giving the other two some wholesome advice*discharged them. The Public Trustee informs us that Mr. Leonard C. Jones is in error in thinking that solicitors are appointed to act as agents for the Public Trust Office in country towns, as such is not the practice. It is 6nly in very exceptional circumstances that a solicitor is appointed agent, as is shown, by the fact that out of thirty-eight agencies of the Public Trust Office in the colony only one is held by a solicitor. It is suggested that as Mr. Jones describes himself as a visitor to the colony it might have been better for him to have made a few enquiries before rushing into print. Yesterday a poll was taken for the return of two representatives of Porirua Riding, and one for the Mungaroa Riding, of the Hutt County Council. The result was: — Porirua Riding: R. Bould, 131; P.
