Pobiedonostzeff, Procumtor-Gonoral of tho Holy Synod, refused to sign a Bill to modernise intermediate education and to lessen the study of classical languages. The Minister of Public Instruction (M. Vaunovsky) thereupon resigned. M. Vannovsky, who was appointed last year, after the assassination of the previous Minister, M. liogolepoff, by a disappointed student, endeavoured consistently to remove the grievances of the students, and to wean them from the revolutionary movement.
