VICTOR HUGO'S FATHER.
The Victor Hugo Centenary celebrations in France are to include tho erection, at Nancy, of a monument to the novelist's father, General Joseph Sigisbert Hugo. General Hugo, who wrote memoirs, was a distinguished soldier of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, particularly famous for his success in cornering the De Wets of those days. Charette, the Vendean leader, Fra Diavolo, and Juan Martin, the Spanish guerillero, were all captured by him. He held a command for some time in Madrid, where his children joined him and were sent to school.
