THE WORLD'S GREAT PHRASES.
The International Peace Society of Milan (whose President is Signor Monettt, of II Secolo), have lately issued a remarkably interesting illustrated almanac for 1902. The reader who delves ia this little mine of curious infocsaation will find several pages devoted to the world's great phrases — phrase* which have become the common property- of all nations —in all, 172. In every oase the phrase is given in its ou£i&ol language, with an Italian translation, and the name of its author ia alio always given. To these 172 great phrases .England ho* made the paltry contributian of five I From these five one ought strictly to be deduoted, for the phrase "God and Liberty/ is due to Voltaire, who ufctered i» when giving his benedictiea to Vvanklin's nephew. Tho other four are as follows : — "A horse ! a horse Imy kingdom for » horso !" ("Richard III." Act. V., so. 4), "Britons never shall be elavee>" "England expectea that every man wijl do hU duty," and Gladstone's words about the Bourbon Government, "This is the negation of God erected into a system of government." — Westminster Budget.
