FRANCE AND THE NEW HEBRIDES.
-+ EXPLANATION BY THE FRENCH CONSUL. [PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] (Received June 28, 9.32 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Tho Right Hon. E. Barton (Federal Premier) has received a letter from the French Consul-General stating that his remarks published in a Sydney journal with reference to the New Hebrides were not accurately reported on points specially noted. He is confident that Mr. .Barton will recognise that he would not confuse private ownership of land with territorial rights-. The conversation was unofficial, and his personal views were a a private matter. In the alleged interview he confined himself generally to admitted facts, and did not refer to matters of controversy. (Received Juno 28, 9.43 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Argus, dealing with the French Consul-General's recent statements with reference to the New Hebrides, says they clearly indicate the urgency of Federal , action. There is no further excuse for the feeble, fluctuating policy pursued in the past, and every need for exercising strict vigilance in order to prevent the Commonwealth rights being "jumped." It was merely throwing dust in our eyes to talk of exchanging the New* Hebrides for some French advantage in Nigeria or elsewhere.
