CHESS TOURNAMENT. THE HONOURS GO TO OTAGO.
[ax TELEGRAPH. — FHESS ASSOCIATION.]' GHBISTCH-UfiCH, 11th April. ' The chess tournament was brought to a conclusion to-night, the championship being won by Mr. D.'ltosyfch, of Otago. Mr* W. B. Mason played the 4 Kuy Lopez, opening against Mr. Barnard, but the latter player was obviously suffering from the strain of the match. His form was not up to his usual standard, and he lost a piece by oversight, which quickly pave the game to his opponent. Mr. J. Wood adopted a French defence against Mr. Forsyfch, but was soon in diflicnltiesl At the eleventh move he lost a rook, which seriously compromised his position. Mr. R. J. Barnes opened with the Iluy Lopez attack against Mir. J. M/ison, and won the game alter the most exciting and intevestihg play in the tournament; All the pieces were cleared off the board, and iiheigaine resolved itself into a pawn ending. Foe a long- time the tide of fortune fluctuated, but ultimately Mr. Mason made a .weak move by which Mr. Barnes was enabled to brinp lire king into a commanding pdsitiou, which carried him to victory.
