At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Lillio Long was again charged with having wilfully ill-treated Chas. Long, aged twelve years. Inspector Ellison said the re-hearing had been applied for because the boys had shown such mortal terror of being sent back to their stepmother. The Bench said that further evidence had thrown an entirely new light on the case. There was no doubt that accused had been guilty of gross cruelty to Chas. Long, and she would be sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. The Christchurch branch of the Amalgamated Society of Rainvay Servants unanimously passed the following motion at the quarterly meeting: — "That in the opinion of this meeting weekly or fortnightly payment of wages would be more in the interest of employees than, the present system of paying fourweekly."
