COMMANDER OF THE BRITISH TROOPS.
GENERAL GREi\FELL APPOINTED. (Received July 21, 9 a.m.) LOaDON, 20th July. Lieut. -General Sir Francis Grenfeh has been appointed to the command of the British troops sent to China. . [Sir Francis Grenfell, who is fifty-nine years of age, is an office* who gained distinction in the Egyptian wars. Prior to these he had served in the Kaffir and Zulu wars, and in the first Transvaal campaign. From 1882 to 1889 he was in Egypt, and he preceded Lord Kitchener as Sirdar of the fellaheen armyj then for three years (1894 to 1897) was Inspector-General of Auxiliary iSlores to the >»ar Office, and in 1897 and 1898 commanded the British portion of the forces in Egypt. Since the beginning of last year he has been Governor and Com-mander-in-Chief at Malta. Sir Francis, of course, will lake the general command of the British troops in China, Major General Gaselee, presumably, retaining command of the Indian division.]
