VI CTO RIA COLLEGE COUNCIL.
+ Last night's meeting of the Victoria College Council was attended by Sir Robert Stout (Chairman), Messrs. J. R. Blair, T. R. Fleming, C. 'Watson, G. Talbot, C. Wilson, A. W. Hogg M.H.R., J. P. Firth, J. Graham, M.H.R., A. R. Guinness, M.H.R. (who took his seat for the first time), Dr. Wallis, Rev. W. A. Evans, Dr. - C. •P. Knight, and Dr. W. A. Chappie. Accounts amounting 'to £285 6s 2d were passed for payment, and authority given to expend £12 7s 6d on further apparatus required by. the lecturer on geology. • '■ • - - The Law Students^' Association expressed "its thanks' for the Council's contribution towards the purchase of law reports,, and for the use of a loom. Messrs. Blair and Wilson were appointed, to represent the Council on a joint committee of members from the Council;,' the Taranaki an<J. Vv v anganui Education Boards, and the INew Plymouth High School Board, which is to confer and arrange the details under which the scholarships proposed to be established out- of the, funds of the ■ 'Opaku • ' University Reserve should .be held. " " The • committee is to have power to settle details and obtain Parliamentary • sanction to the scheme adopted. The Chairman, dealing with the proposals concerning scholarships in the. Victoria College Act Amendment Bill, pointed out that these would now take £1800 instead of £1200. > The Councx. had asked the Government to give it more revenue,, but it got additional outlay^on scholarships and no extra money. The Council was quite willing that there should' be extra scholarships, but had recommended 1 ' ■ that the Government should provide J,ov them. ' After discussion, it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Fleming, seconded by Rev. W. A. Evans — "That the Victoria College, Act Amendment Bill, so far as Scholarship's are, concerned, does riot carry put - the recommendations of the Council, and the Council respectfully urges that the recommendations made in May, 1900, be given effect to ; that the amendments proposed in the present Bill, if given effect to, will seriously cripple the resources of the College."
