« THE W.E.C. WINTER MEETING. The rain which came on at the conclusion of the first race yesterday accompanied by a biting southerly wind, made it , about as uncomfortable as could be imagined ' for those who attended the opening day- of the W.R.O. Winter Meeting.- 'Tfte Governor and delegates- to;'the Racing," Trotting, Municipal" and-Licens-ed Victuallers' Conferences were among the guests. 'The course, naturally, was soon in a bad sta,te, and the riders were hardly recognisable on returning to the padd.ock. The totalisator receipts were very satisfactory under the circumstances, £8064 being .handled, as against £64/3 for the corresponding day of last year, an increase of £1591. Despite the heavy ground the sport was good. Cairo had a soft thing in the Maiden Steeplechase, and he must have ! a look in for tire big Steeplechase on Saturday. The" Porirua stable supplied the winner for the Maiden Hack Race, as was the case last year. The Taranaki representative in the Stewards'— Lasting, a son of Sylvia Park — made all his own running, and lasted long enough to beat Indian Shot and St. Peter. The latter was a strong favourite, and looked like a winner turning for home, but then died away, although he came again at the end. The Auckland National jaurdle -winner, Chevalier — whose name had to be changed from Cavalier and will be required to make yet another change — was a strong order for the Winter Hurdle Handicap. Unfortunately, he lost ground at the two last fences, and this , .cost > him the race, for, although he got alongside Hau-' riri below the distance, he could not shake Marina's full brother off, and they >jan to the post locked together. The Judge- could not separate them, although there was almost a unanimous opinion among the public that Hauriri had won. L. Robinson rode a nice waiting race on Will-o'-the-Wisp in the Parliamentary Handicap settling Derringcotte in the last few strides. Menaderva came to grief at the water jump in her. preliminary for the Hack and Hunters Steeplechase, and the start was delayed some time ' before she was caught. In the race, curiously she was the only one who did not make a mistake, and finished Hferself. Kaiwhakaroa seemed to have the race at hi« meroy but for toppling over at the bush in front of the stand. Ihe day's racing ended in a big boil over in the Hack Race, a cobby chestnut named »»airaka, ! by \>onderland — Waihora, clearing away from his field and winning handsomely ' from 'Ngatahuia.Vwbo ran Tfrell under his big weight. Wairaka is trained by R. Knox, of Masterton, a veteran trainer, who brought. -off a coup with La Marquise in a Maiden Hack Race at the Hutt some time back, when she paid a £25 dividend.
