A NEW RELIEF FUND.
This morning Colonel Penton received from Mr. N. E. M'Taggart, of Lepperton, Taranaki, a cheque for £50, the proceeds of an entertainment held there in connection with the war fund. The money has been placed at Colonel Penton's disposal according to his judgment, ,and he proposes to make it the nucleus of a fund for the purpose of giving immediate temporary assistance where required to the relaiiv-es in the colony of members of the Contingents who have been killed in action or died of disease, or to the men who may return invalided. The colonel thinks that a fund of this kind which would be immediately available is most desirable, as although there are numerous patriotic funds there may be considerable delay in dispensing relief in necessitous cases. The proposal has been approved by the peoplo of Lcpgerlon, and Colonel Penton will be glad to rsceive and acknowledge subscriptions to supplement the £50 nucleus. There *are already a number of invalided men on their way back to this colony from South Africa, and prompt assistance may be necessary in regard to some of these.
