Last April the Transvaal Government put up for tender the fencing of the Netherlands Railway of the Transvaal. The barbed wire was duly delivered, but it never was used to fence the railway. It reappeared in- the Tugela River and ! round the trenches at Magersfontein. The South African Review states that Secretary Reitz is very angry with the Bond leaders in the Cape Parliament for not distributing the money they have had from Pretoria. He threatens to give full particulars of the amounts they have received to Sir Alfred Milner. The Standard and Diggers' News says that President Steyn concludes his Now Year's message to the burghers as follows :— " Next year the Afrikanaer nation will enjoy peace and rest, and that peace will be established on the basis that the ep.emy who has oppressed . and persecuted us during the whole of the last century shall no longer be in a position to spill innopent blood. May God in his infinite mercy grant this." An amusing incident occurred recently at Arundel. The Boer Adjutant at Arundel had gone out for a couple of days' hunting, and, returning highly elated with a fine buck slung across x his saddle, rode straight into the town, only to find our troops there and himself a prisoner. He says that the Free Staters are anxious to withdraw from the war, and that numbers of them have deserted, but were captured, fined heavily, and sent to a laager. ________»._«■.
