NEW ZEALAND'S CONTINGENT.
OUR MEN UNDER FIRE. CAPETOWN, 11th December. The New Zealand Mounted Infantry and. some of the New South Wales Lancers commanded by Lieut. Cox, made a reconnaissance from Naauwpoort and drew the enemy's fire. The colonials returned the shots of the Boers, killing five of their number. When the New Zealauders arrived at Aruudel, near Colesberg, on Friday with a detachment o£ Major - General French's cavalry brigade, an inspection of the neighbourhood revealed the enemy in considerable strength seven miles to the northward towards Colesberg. DETAILS SENT BY THE AGENTGENERAL. The Premier has received the following cablegram from the Agent-General under yesterday's date : — The New Zealand Contingent "had its first skirmish at Arundel on Friday. The enemy were compelled to retreat, losing seven men. Our loss was one horse only. THE TROOPSHIP WAIWERA. Messrs. Levin and Co. have been advised by cable message that the Waiwera, which took the New Zealand Contingent to South Africa, Bailed from Capetown for Wellington via Hobart on tho 9th inst. She may be looked for in about thirty days from sailing dale.
