A serious mining accident occurred at Cjpitouui this morning to Alfred Wilson, who was etopiug single-handed on Lauigan's reef, when lie was crushed beneath a fall of mullock. Wilson, who hns a wife and three children, was carried over the ranges to tho Corouiandel Hospital. Owing to his injuries it was feared that he would bleed to death. An inquest was held touching the death of Martin Schollin, aged 70, who was found dead 011 the floor of bis bedroom at the Swan Hotel. The deceased was a servant of the hotel. He had beep a soldier. The verdict waa that death resulted from heart disease. Dunedin, Bth August, Annie Lee, an elderly woman, died suddenly at her house in Howe-street this morning. 3be bad been an invalid for ten years. Her husband is working at Raufurly.
Mr. John Gardiner, contractor, who met his death at Taihape yesterday morning by a blasting accident and fall of earth, formerly resided in Masterton, and afterwards occupied a small farm section on the Hnutnpu Block, but lately bo has been engaged in connection with the construction of tho railway tunnel near Taihape. He waa in turn a Past Master Mason, a Justice of the Peace, and a member of the Pahiatua County Council, and at the time of his death was President of tho Pahiatua Liberal and Labour League. Tho deceased leaves a sister in Wellington, Mrs. John Dale. A singular accident (an exchange says) befel Mr. W. Humphrey at Hunterville a day or two ngo. A wheel of the trap be was driving having gone over an inequality in the road, caused him to lose his balance, lie endeavoured to save himself from falling by placing his baud on the splash board, but this gave «,ay under his weight, and caused him .to fall, one arm becoming entangled in the wheel in such a way as to stop it from revolving. The horse stopped us soon as it felt the extra pull, though ho was drawn into snob a position that it was necessary to take off tbe wheel in order to release the arm. The arm and hand were, lacerated and bruised, but no bones were broken.
