THE PRICE OF SHEEP. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir — I have no other desire, in writing to you again, than to remind Messrs. Millward and Reid that they have not vouchsafed" any replies to my earnest appeal to be" released from 1 further obligation of secreoy. Without such release my mouth is shut, and I cannot prove how it came ab,out f tha£ I discussed with Messrs. Millward and Reid the affairs of the Gear Company. If neither one nor the other replies or complies then the public — who must Le our judges.— w#l know how to regard their silence. I am- Able at this present, however I,'1 ,' to cull r a witness. Mr. Coleman Phillips, in a letter to a Wairarapa paper, says — "Let me inform you that the contents of the three letters which appeared in the Evening; Post over the signatures of Messrs.' Reid, Millward, and Buchanan were' not, 1 to my mind, warranted, as I happen to know that an arrangement was offered by the Wellington Meat Export Company and accepted by the Gear Company." • And again, he says — "The sequel is showing that all 1 said was perfectly justified. Yet- so powerful are the companies thai members of them even now openly resort to deliberate fairy tales to cover up their actions." Sir, I have not much to add. First of all, though, let me thank, you for the insertion in your widely-read journal of my letters. They have ,been written with a purpose which is near, .its fulfilment — namely, the exposure of the. wrong done by the freezing companies to the* sheep farmers of the W*urarapa, and the awakening of the producer to a knowledge of the enormity of the offences bommitted against him in tae name of "commercial enterprise." I know that in every direction sheep farmers have receivebV.the information I have given them as reliable, for is it not backed up by their own- experience? .In the face of all that I have scvid and written Messrs. Millward and Reid remain silent. Let them but givo me permission to speak out and I will prove who has been making the "recklass misstatements." — I am, etc., J. T. M. Hoknsbt, Editor Wairarapa Leader. Carterton, 15th April, 1899.
