Further facts concerning the population of the colony have been arranged in interesting form by the Registrar - General, Mr. E. J. Yon Dadelszen. The figures below require no explanation: —

The birth rate for New Zealand has fallen from 3T22 per 1000 of population of all ages in 1888 to 25*74 in the. year 1898. In 1807 the rate was 25*96, and this, although the lowest for all the Australasian colouies, was nevertheless almost equal to the rAtes obtaining in Victoria (26*63) and New South AVales (2644). And it must be remembered that the decline of the birth rate between 1888 and 1897 in New Zealand is the least in degree for the group of colonies above referred to. With the above features it must be noticed that the death rate in New Zealand is by far the lowest of the rates for the Australasian colonies, the figures for 1897 being: — Death-rate per 1000 persons liviug: New Zealand, 914; New South Wales, 1089; South Australia, 1118; Queensland, 11*33 ; Tasmania, 11*53; Victoria, 12*83; Western Australia, 17*63.
