FIRE IN A UCKLAND.

[BY TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, 30th January. A destructive firp broke out in Liverpoolstreet, off Karangahape-road' this afternoon. Five dwellings were destined, all being two-storied houses save one. The fire originated in the ironing- room of Stokes's Laundry, Liverpool - street. The effects were insured for £100 in the Manchester office. Mr. J. Edson's house was destroyed, but the insurance is unknown. Miss Tighe's house, destroyed, wa9 insured for £100 in the Norwich Union. Mr. T. M. Taylor was insured for £IQO in the North British. The owner, named Fitzsimmons, is in Western Australia. Three houses owned by Miss Belcher were insured in the New Zealand 'office for £825. A tenaut, Mrs. Caitcheon, a'' dressmaker, had nor effects insured for £100 in the South British office. Another tenant, named Hainley, was insured for £200. Two lodgers, Professor Carollo and Hookey, had their effects insured in the Royal for £40 and £50 respectively. Most of the tenants were away on their holidays. The total loss is over £3000. Some of the members of the Fire Brigade were competing at the regatta, and had to come ashore. They were driven to the fire in cabs. There was considerable delay in getting the Mount Eden pressure on, owing to a defect in the telephone communication, and the highest pressure only gave 371b to the square inch.

The vacation at St. Patrick's College is about at an end. The students will reassemble on Saturday next, and form classes on Monday.
