AN INDIGNANT SOLICITOR. [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Christchurch, 27th January. At Lyttelton, yesterday, John Griffiths, charged with having stabbed Cecil Payne on 9th January on board the Rotomahana, while on a voyage from Wellington to Lyttelton, was committed for trial. During the case Mr. Doiftielly, who was defending the accused, asked a witness if he had ever been convicted. The Police Sergeant conducting the case objected to the question, which he said was improper and could only have been asked through ignorance. Mr. Donnelly replied hotly, and as the Bench upheld the objection, Mr. Donnelly said he would abandon the case and report the matter to the urouev authorities*
