THE RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
But for the wretched weather yesterday^ the exodus from the city by train would probably have been in excess of the record, but, as it was, special trains had to be requisitioned to bring tlie bedraggled would » be holiday makers back to their homes. Some 2500 persons went from town on the Government line, the largest train being that wMch took the Roman Catholic 'picnickers to the Lower Hut*. About 300 passengers came to town from the Wairarapa, and the afternoon, train to Masterton took 250 away. Over idOOO left the city on the Wellington-Manawatu railway, 700 of these going to Plimmerton and 400 to Crof ton. These latter went by the 10 o'clock train, but so heavy was. the downpour of rain that they never leftthe carriages, but returned to Wellington. All last week, and more particularly oa Saturday, the traffic was heavy on both lines.
