The ailment from which Don Praxedes Sagasta, Premier of Spain, is suffering, is pneumonia, supervening upon an attack of influenza. Washington, 24th December. Pearson, the former attache of the British Embassy — who lately threw bricks through a glass door at the Embassy, injuring Miss Pauncefote, daughter of the Ambassador — has escaped from the lunatic asylum in which he was confined. Shanghai, 25th December. Russia is opening schools at Port Arthur and Talienwan. Constantinople, 241h December. During a quarrel in a pastrycook's shop, Hafnz Bey, one of the Sultan's chamberlains, killed an Imperial aide-de-camp named Chani Pasha. It is stated that the Pasha was the leader of a gang of Albanians who extorted money by means of threats from storekeepers. The Foreign Embassies had frequently complained of his conduot. Hardinge, British Consul-General at Zanzibar, has denied a report that it is intended to cede the island to Germany. Sydney. Tnis Day. The Council-General of New Caledonia has voted a floating loan of £400,000, and it only awaits the ratification of the French Government, which guarantees the interest. St. Petersburg, 25th December. Russia has failed to place a loan of 90,000,000 dollars with American bankers.
