OBITUARY. THE HON.T.F.BAYARD.

[FBESS ASSOCIATION.] Washington, 29th September. The death is auuounced of the Hon. T. P. Bayard, formerly United States Ambassador in England, at the age of 70 years. [Mr. Bayard was the first United States Ambassador Extraordinary aud Plenipotentiary to Great Britain, his predecessors being ranked only as Envoys Extraordinary. He represented his nation in London from 1893 till less than two years ago, when Col. John ■Hay, who has now just retired, succeeded him. As an Ambassador he was strikingly successful, proving a worthy link in that chain of cultured Americans — Lowell, Phelps, Bayard, Hay, to mention only four — wiio have by their official residence in London done so much to maintain happy relations between the two Anglo-Saxon Powers. Mr. Bayard was born at Wilmington, Del., on 29th October, 1828. Designed by his father for mercantile pursuits, his desires were in the direction of a legal career. His friends wisely did not thwart him, and his studies were so fruitful that he was called to the bar before he was 23 years of age. He had influential friends at his back, aud above all his father was a United States Senator, so thcit it was not difficult for young Bayard to be fitted with an office. This was the position of Attorney-General for the State his father represented, Delaware, which he was given within less than two years after he was galled to the bar. Young Bayai'd in 18C9 'succeeded his father 5 as Senator for Delaware, and retained that position till 1885, when he became a member of President Cleveland's first Cabinet as Secretary of State. At the close of that administration Mr. Bayard retired into private life, where he remained until President Cleveland, on taking office again, sent bin? to London. THE QUEEN OF DENMARK. MANY ROYAL HOUSES THEOWN INTO MOURNING. (Received September 30, 8.46 a.m.) Copenhagen, 29th Septembar. The Queen of Denmark has succumbed to the illness from which she has been suffering for some weeks past. Her age was 81. [Queen Louise, who was the daughter of the Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse-Cassel, was born on the 7th September, 1817, and was married to the Prince who is now King Christian IX. of Denmark in May, 1842. Her Majesty might well be called a mother of Kings and Queens, for-her second son is the present King of the Helleuei, while no other royal house bas furnished so many either crowned or prospective Queons as that of Denmark. Our own beloved Princess of Wales is her eldest daughter, the Dowager Empress of Russia is her second daughter, and another (Princes 9 Thyra) is the wife of Prince Ernest August, Duke of Cumberland, who only lost a throne through the absorption of Hanover in the Prussian Monarchy. Purther alliauces with European royal houses are the marriage of her grandson, Prince Karl, to Princess Maud of Wales, and of a granddaughter to Prince Charles of Sweden, while one son is married to Princess Marie of Orleans, eldest daughter of the Due de Chartres. The domestic virtues of the deceased Queen as evidenced m the training of her children have long been proverbial.]
