The Now Zealand Oyster Fisheries Company is anxious to obtain a lea^e of the foreshore at Pahautanui extending from the boundary o£ its present reserve at the head of the harbour to the railway bridge at Paremata, as it finds that the water on its beds is not quite suitable for its purposes, being rather too muddy. The company haviug made application for an extended area, the Government commissioned Sir James Hector to make a report on the subject, and he bas just made a close inspection of the oyster beds and also of the remaining portion of the beach which the company is anxious to lease. There were 202 passengers from Australia by the Monowai this afternoon. Of these 140 landed at this port. The annual meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children is fixed for Tuesday, 4th October, at the Art Gallery, and His Excellency the Governor will preside.
