The burial, with military honours, of the late Sergeant-Major TV. J. Jeffreys, of the D Battery, took place this afternoon. There was a good muster of the comrades of the deceased in the Battery, under the command of Lieutenant Hume. The escort was furnished by the Permanent Militia, and the Garrison Band played the funeral marches. The Wellington Guards, the City, Kelburne, Civil Service, and Zealandia Exiles, and the Navals were represented at the funeral ; and besides these there were a large number of private mourners. The Rev. W. Baumber conducted the service at the graveside, the interment being made in the Karori Cemetery. The soldier's " farewell shot " of three volleys concluded the sad rites. Some of the latest, local recruits to the Police Eorce are at least endowed with a sufficiency of size, one of them standing Oft 3fin. The claimant alleges [ that her land had been injuriously affected by , tho Council undermining it, and causing it I to become unstable. The sum of £250 was, j therefore, claimed as compensation for loss and damage arising out of defendants' wrong- . fill action in the construction of a street. Tho land in. question was section 403, containing > 13"3 perches, and having a frontage of s 33ft to Shannon-street. That street, it ' appears, was taken over by the Council in . April, 1806, and the cutting down of the , crown of tho road for some feet was begun in June of that year, at the request of a ! number of the residents, to make the grade P easier. The high-level footpath was allowed \ to remain, and the Council contends that as ) the footpath in front of McCarthy's bad not been lowered at all the property could not possibly have been injured as alleged. The evidence called was of a conflicting character., Mr. W. F. Shortt will sell to-morrow, ' sundries,
