THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE SITE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir — In the discussion of this subject — so all-important to a city's- name— there is one point that does not seem to be touched upon. Amongst the students attending the College there will undoubtedly be ladies, and us some of the lectures will probably be given in the evening, it is somewhat necessary to consider the environs aud approach of the College. Should the site of the Mount Cook Gaol be chosen, students from some parts will have to pass through streets ill-lighted and not of the most savoury description. This to many would be a serious obstacle. Then another point : From experience at other Colleges one would infer that there is every probability of ladies going in for University work in a dillelanle spirit — that is to say, with no intention of talcing their degrees. Though some would decry this spirit, yet it surely is better than that which finds its only scope in rounds of calls. Now, while Te Aro will come towards > Thorndon, Thorndon — for reasons best known to itself — has an innate objection to going towards Te Aro. Thus, wliile in other towns — notably Cliristchureh — the University exercises a leavening effect on fashionable society, in Wellington its benefits would be appreciated by the studious few alone.
