MATCH FACTORIES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir — In view of the distressing disclosures showing the existence of necrosis, or phosphorus poisoning, among the operatives emplo3*ed in the wax match factories of England, I think that it behoves the people of this colony to see that proper medical supervision is exercised with regard to the local factories. The dread disease was proved, in the English Court of Justice, to have been existent to a general extent, and the proprietors of the factory in question were veiy properly heavily fined. The Continental Governments seem to have an effectual grasp of the situation, and in most countries it is necessary to procure a monthly certificate from the official medical officer showing that the factory is free from necrosis. Cannot we have some legislation enacted in this colony to protect the men and girls employed at work in these match factories ? II seems to me very vital that the dread disease should not have the chance it surely has unless due precautions are taken. At any rate, it is possible to minimise the evil. I am, &c, Health.
