ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS.
To-morrow His Excellency Ihe Governor will open Ihe tenth annual Exhibition of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. The number of exhibits is considerably larger than last year, although the oils are fewer. Most of the local artists are Avell represented, and some of Ihe work shous a decided advance in quality. Three new presentation works are shown for Ihe fir.st time this year, two — " Raurakea, on the Wnngaimi "River/ and " Mount Cook from the Tasman Valley," painted and bequeathed by the late C.*D. Barraud— and one, "Appledon Ferry, Devonshire," by C. P. Knight, presented by Miss Shaen. Lady Ranfurly, besides cont rihuting some water-colours of her own, lends four charming landscapes by Leopold "Rivers, a line street, scene of Prout's, and an original pencil drawing of the Florentine engraver, liartolozzi, together with a small Cattermolo " Guilty of Sacrilege." Among other works lent 'to tho Exhibition are a Tweed bas-relief of Dr. Hunter, lent by Dr. W. K. FyiTe ; a fine Cornish coast scene in water-colours by Reginald Smith, A.R.A., lent by Mrs. J. 11. "Williams; and tvio Dartmoor pictures, by Charles X Brittain, also lent by ilrs. Williams. The results of the annual competitions are as follows : — Design lor .outside of the catalogue, A. E. Abhoti, Christehurch, 1 ; higiily commended, E. li. S. Hill, Christehurch. Figure from'the antique, Ella yon Meyern, Wellington. Study from still life, S. L. Thompson, Christchnreh, 1 ; Ella Adams, Blenheim, 2 ; Myrtle Lee, Lower liutl, commended. Study from Life— M. S. M. M'Leod, Dunedin, J ; Ethel Jones, Wellington, 2. Landscape from Nature — 11. Proter, Chrislcimrch, J ; Myrtle Lee, Lower Hutt, 2; H. G. Filzherbert, commended.
