FIRE AT WANGANUI.
4 [by telegrapn — press association.] Wanganui, This Day. An old building of 25 rooms, occupied as a boarding-house, and formerly the Ship Hotel, was burned to the ground this morning. The fire started at 7 o'clock last evening, and the boarders thought they put it out. The proprietor sat up all night in case of accident, so as to alarm the boarders. Had he not done so, probably their lives would have been lost, as the fire spread rapidly. The building was insured for £300 in the Alliance office, the furniture for £250 in the National and North German.
A settler informed the Ellesmere Guardian that he is poisoning small birds iv hundreds. He has found poisoned rape and turnip seed — the sweepings of the seed bin — most effective, and has picked up blackbirds, whiteeyes, larks, sparrows, and linnets in large numbers.
