OUR DEFENCE FORCES.

The Governor has informed Major Collins that it is his intention to present a challenge cup to the AVellington Rifle Battalion, to be fired for next year. His Excellency is Honorary Colonel of the Battalion, and takes a warm interest in the volunteer movement. The members of the Wellington Cycle Corps paraded in the streets last night under Lieutenants Muir and Hutson, and also went through arm and company drill inside ihe Garrison Hall. There was a muster of 45 of all ranks at the parade of the Wellington Guards last night. Captain Duthie was iv command, and Lieutenant Harcourt was also present. The teams to represent the Petone Navals in the Morris tube match against the Wellington Navals to-morrow week will be picked from the following, who will practise this evening and on Saturday : — C.P.O.'s Wood and Sedgwick; P.O.'s Jenkins, Berntsen, Horsfall, Parrant, and ITinlay; L.G.s Holmes, Cruickshank, Edmonds, Hamilton, and Wilkie; Guns. Pettett (2), Hickson, Hardham, Yanko, Golding, Dawson, Eagles, M'lntyre (2), Hollard, Kelly, Price, C. Creighton, Mills, Knight, Ishervvood, Ryan, Fraser, Lusty, HepplestoD, Morrison, and Brookes. Dr. C. D. Henry is gazetted SurgeonCaptain to the Wellington College Rifles. Captain J. G. Hughes, of the Napier' Guards, is gazetled Captain and Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion, Wellington (East Coast) Rifie Volunteers.
