THE WEATHER.
* Saturday's weather prediction was fully borne out, and cold and rain continued throughout the whole of .yesterday and up to this morning. The Museum" records show that just T72in of rain fell during the 48 hours ending at i) o'clock this morning. The maximum temperature recorded this morning at Mr. T. W. Ro-.ve's residence, Upper Hawker-street, for the previous 24 hours was <W9deg, and the minimum 380 deg, the latter, occurring with an overcast sky, being very low. In the cold spell of the last week of May, the temperatures recorded on the mornings of the 29th, 30th, and 31st for the previous days were, maxima —48"3 deg, 44'Udeg, and 47'8deg; minima—39's dog, 38-9deg, and 42-3deg. On the morning of 10th June the temperatures recorded were 47'6deg and 39'0deg, since then the maximum has always been above 50deg. This morning the glass began to rise again, and the sun has phono brightly this afternoon though the air is still sharp. This morning's telegraphic report shows that although the weather was heavy in the far north it was not too much so to obscure a brilliant meteor which passed over Cape Maria Van Diemen. Heavy gales with rain were reported at liussell, along the Thames and Cambridge, Gisborue, and New Plymouth; at Blenheim snow fell on the ranges, and over the South Island generally a heavy frost was experienced.
No fewer than 75 applications have been received for the position of teacher of the new school at lloseneath. The salary is to be about £200 per annum. The applications will be dealt with at the meeting of the J3oard of Education on Wednesday. This afternoon in the Magistrate's Court Margaret Wickhani and Martha Haddrell were charged with vagrancj'. Wickham pleaded Guilty, and. was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Haddrell pleaded " Guilty to a certain extent," and was remanded for a week. Both stated their intention of leaving for Christchurch. Francis J. Fitzgerald, for tailing to comply with a maintenance order, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended for a week. Christina J. Cattoll was granted a separation order from her husband, Jas. Cattell, with custody of the children, towards whose support defendant was ordered to pay 5s per week each. Win. Neary was ordered to pay Gs per week to euppprt jeacli of bia children. /
