To-day ller Majesty the Queen completes the Gist year of her reign, and her subjects in these distant islands will join the rest of the Empire in heartily congratulating her upon the longand momentous period during which her tactful wisdom has steadied the ship of Stale. Not ouly has her reign been the longest in the history of our race, but it has also been marked by the greatest progress towards real selfgovernment, and for the easy transition from personal to constitutional monarchy we have largely to thank the Queen herself. A correspondent calls attention to the fact that, although this is distinctly a day for flying all official flags, from Government House to this office the only flags fifing were those of Turnbull and Co., Union S.S. Co., Harbour Board, and the N.Z. Insurance Co. Not a siugle foreign Consul's flag in the city, he slates, was flying, and although the Working Men's Club had its flag up there was none visible ou the Government Insurance Office. This neglect was, we are sure, purely an oversight, and no conscious show of disrespect or disloyalty. The Police Commission is to sit at New Plymouth on Wednesday.
