O RESULT OF THE INQUEST. [BY TELEGBAPH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Carterton, 27th May. At the inquest ou the body of the newlyborn child of Madeline Cross the evidence showed that there were three wounds in the throat, made with a pair of scissors. The body was found in the clothes in a box under a bed. It had been there from Sunday to Wednesday. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, that deaMi resulted from baomorrhage, but that whether it was due to the wounds in the throat or the untied umbilical cord the evidence did not show. This Day. Madeline Cross was to-day charged at the Magistrate's Court with the murder of her infaut, and was remauded till Tuesday next. Bail was allowed, herself in £25, and two sureties of £25 each. j [oub own correspondent.] Carterton, This Day. At the inquest ou the body of the newlyborn child of Madeline Gross it was proved that the girl was only 18 years old and looked less. She came to Carterton in NoVember, 1897, and had been in a situation three months before she wont to the house where the tragedy occurred, at ♦ which she had then been only a fortnight. The child was born on the Sunday, and the yonng mother went about her work, although looking very ill and miserable. She had no relatives here. She told the doctors who examined her that she had inflicted the Wounds on the dhild's neck with the scissors. It neither moved nor cried out. She also said she did not know she was likely to become a mother. The girl was subject to fits, and was strange in her manner, and is looked upon as one not responsible for her actions.
