THE AMERICAN INTEREST IN THE ALLIANCE SCHEME. [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Washington, 26th May. Sir Julian Pauncefote, British Ambassador, has received many letters from all parts of America, strongly advocating an alliance with Britain.
(Received May 27, 9.20 a.m.) New Yobk, 26th May. The Conference convened for the settlement of the international disputes between Canada and the United States has been opened. Sir Louis Davies represents Canada, imd the United States Government is represented by Messrs. Foster aud Kasson.
May. M. Le Bon, Minister for the Colonies, was defeated in the elections, but he remains in the Ministry until the signing of the Niger Convention. M. Hanotaux, Foreign Minister, takes the portfolio of Minister for the Colonies, and M. Henri Boucher that of PostmasterGeneral.
[PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Capetown, 25th May. Mr. Cecil Rhodes ha* acquired the interest in the Delagoa Bay Railway (running into the Transvaal) of Mr. M'Murdo, one of the principal proprietors.
[PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Madhid, 26th May. The Government has decided not to take hostile steps at Gibraltar against Britain. In the event of an Anglo-American alliance being concluded it would be necessary, however, to protect the territory overlooked by Gibraltar.
