ST. PATRICK'S DAY.

The natal day of Ireland's patron Saint is beinj, r celebrated in Wellington to-day in a becoming manner. The weather, although rather " blowy," is fine overhead. All the Government, legal, and insurance oftices in the city have been closed all day, aud the retail establishments since noon. The Hibernian- Society, together with the Juvenile branch of the Order, attended service at St. Mary's Cathedral at 9 o'clock, and listened to an appropriate discourse upon St. Patrick from Archbishop Redwood. Mass was celebrated by the Very Rev. Father Lewis, At the conclusion of the service a procession of the Hibernians was formed, and, headed by the Garrison Eand under Mr. T. Herd, it inarched to the Basin Reserve, where sports are being held. The results of the earlier events were as follows : — Maiden Race, 220 yds ; Ist prize £1, 2nd NX— A. A. Pritchard, 1 ; T. Price, 2. Only three started. Won easily. Time, 34 3-ssec. Boys' Race, 220 yds— Pole, 1 ; Mitchelson, 2. St. Patrick's Day Bicycle Race, £15; three distances; half mile, one mile, and three miles.— First distance— lst prize £3, E. H. Watson, 35yds, I ; 2nd £1, Coulton, 40yds, 2; 3rd 10s, G. R.
