4 [by telegraph—own correspondents.] Carterton, This Day. The original loan of £1500 for the construction of the Hurumuorangi Bridge, and the Awhea loan of £1000, bearing interest at 7 per cent., fall due on the 31st December, 1898. The County Council has asked the member for the district, Mr. Buchanan, to endeavour in the coming session to get an amendment to the Loans to Local Bodies Act passed to permit counties to borrow under the Act aud provide a sinking fund. A special order was made striking a rate of four-sevenths of a peuny in the £. to repay a loan of £3000 for the construction of the Moroa water-race. The Wairarapa South County Council resolved that the Government be urged to take prompt steps necessary to prevent the recurrence of railway accidents on the Napier-Wairarapa line. Masterton, This Day. Mr. J. Taplin has sold his Taueru Hotel pi'opert}' with five acres of land adjoining to Mr. Kenneth M'lntosh, late of Tenui. The Masterton School Committee has decided to entertain those taking part in the school excursion from Palmerston North on 23rd March.
